This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters face the sort of issues that come with most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
