The New Mayor Promises a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Speech
On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.
A Historic Mayor
The young political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.
A Sweeping Platform
Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:
- Subsidized daycare
- Fare-free public buses
- A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Dynamics
The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.
The Basic Challenges of Leadership
Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.
As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
