Just as the recent storm tore through the northwest the night before, Manchester City overwhelmed Manchester United away at the their home ground. It was a statement three-nil win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their title credentials as they reinforced their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Defeats for United

This result represented successive Women's Super League setbacks for Skinner's side for the first time since last May, placing them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their championship aspirations severely dented.

The Red Devils' capacity to manage domestic and continental football with a thin squad has been a frequently analyzed subject since they earned a place in the UCL. Looking at the fixture list, it always felt like this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this ability. Regrettably for the opposition, they appeared fatigued all game, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had tried to rotate the squad with a handful of adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all provided vigor, although the omission of the in-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.

City, in contrast, have no such fitness concerns. Jeglertz made one adjustment from last week’s win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

The pressure started to gather for Skinner and his team from the kickoff. This was a show of the quality from City whose dynamic forward line manipulated and dismantled the opposition with a superb first half performance that saw them net a trio in 21 minutes.

This put the hosts firmly in control and left United struggling. In advance of this match, United had allowed just six in this domestic competition but they fell apart in the wake of Manchester City's creative prowess.

Opening Threats

The early indicators came quickly when Vivianne Miedema used her strength to muscle Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot wide. Lauren Hemp was at the core of everything from the start, using the room left by Riviere down the visitors' right side. Her crosses were causing problems and led to an attempt for Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg cleared off the line.

The Red Devils had several attacks forward, their direct style giving them choices in the flanks but they could not challenge Ayaka Yamashita. City, meanwhile, dominated the ball, teasing their rivals and trying to pull them out of their defensive shape.

Triple Strike

They converted their dominance with almost half an hour played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A ball to the back post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to score. It was Manchester City's seventh goal from a cross of the campaign.

They increased their advantage with two more goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was permitted to drive through the midfield from defense, the field became spacious for City. The prominent Casparij received possession on the right side before sending a precise driven ball for Shaw to bundle home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a quick change in possession saw Hemp allowed the space to drive a shot home from distance.

Second Half

The clearest substitution came from Skinner at the interval as Melvine Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came most likely to score, hitting the woodwork, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and did not manage to record a one shot on goal.

The home side, meanwhile, could have added to their cushion when a delightful Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the hosts. Previously unable to overcome any side who ended above them last season, City's side now have successes against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a commanding position after nine matches.
